In a far distant land, where legends roam, three peoplekinds face their troubles together.

Few understand this better than Pergerine, a dragon-like korvi. His hearing is damaged from a century spent mining, and he can't hear a simple conversation for himself; he relies on the help of ferrin assistants, the keen-eared weasel folk Peregrine raises like his own children. But with his dragon lifespan, Peregrine has buried four of his companions — and he will outlive dear Tillian as well. Convinced that he is robbing Tillian of her brief life, Peregrine resolves to change his ways. If he ceases to be a deaf, stubborn miner, maybe his earferrin can be free.

On the same day Peregrine takes wing for a messenger job, Rose faces an epidemic. She is an insect-like aemet, young and recently hurried into her mage position — and dozens of her neighbours are showing symptoms of gripthia. Without enough healing magic, they will die. Unable to save her people alone, Rose sends out a plea for help. A plea that reaches compassionate Tillian's ears.

For the greater good, Peregrine leaves to fly for supplies, while Tillian stays to nurse the ill. While gripthia spreads across the land, Peregrine wonders whether he can live for himself, whether Tillian wants to live without him, and whether Rose and her villagers will live at all.

Remedy is a story of positive themes, personal growth, and the bonds of family. It is intended for open-minded adults. This novel is a stand-alone work, only loosely connected to later Stories of Aligare.

Remedy A Story of Aligare Stories of Aligare Book 1 edition by Heidi C Vlach Literature Fiction eBooks

"Remedy: a novel of Aligare" by Heidi Vlach ... oh, I so wanted to love this book, and for the first few chapters I did. Aligare is a world with three anthropomorphic intelligent species: the dragon/bird Korvi, the pikachuesque ferrin, and the moth-humanoid aemet. They're all quite different, but they're all innately cooperative and peaceful. they live in a cooperative and peaceful medieval-technology, politically decentralized, magically semisophisticated, and vaguely utopianish setting.

But one of the problems with medieval technology is that medicine is not all that good, even with magic to bolster it. Remedy is about when the land is struck by a plague of gripthia — think diphtheria. A nasty disease it is too, contagious among aemet, and first it kills you by clogging your windpipe, and if you survive that it's terribly poisonous. The Aligarians personify it as a demon, complete with a charming story about its name.

And this story is about how Aligare handles the plague. It focusses on a few people. I particularly liked the overworked, undertrained, and utterly doomed town mage trying to take care of two dozen plague victims while herself dying of it.

Ultimately, though ... the story kind of drags. Tending the sick is long hours of giving them mint-water and cold compresses, punctuated by moments of crisis. That's an occupation, a calling even. It is not, alas, a plot for a novel. Some other characters suffer or exert themselves in other ways. That is also not, alas, a plot.

I really love the small parts of this book. The snippets of legend woven in with regular life. The naming conventions of the ferrin, plus the way they signify that they are no longer children. The flavors of love within some protagonist's family.

I just wish the author had written it as a short story, or an ethnography, instead of a full-length novel. The story just doesn't stand up at that length, and the novel is boring with characters constantly fretting the same fret, or making up yet another bowl of mint-water, or aching from yet another flight from point A to point B.

Three magic-filled crystals out of five.

Remedy A Story of Aligare Stories of Aligare Book 1 edition by Heidi C Vlach Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

There are three races in this book, the Aemet, who are susceptible to the epidemic Gripthia, the Ferrin, foxlike helpers who spend their lives helping others, and the long lived Korvi, a reptile like race with wings.
Rose, an Aemet from Fenwater is a healer whose father has just died. She is afraid she is unsuited to step into his shoes so soon, but when the Gripthia hits her fellow Aemet, she must step up to heal them as good as she can. She is a Mage who can use healing stones to keep the sick alive long enough for their bodies to heal themselves. She remains in the city with the sick Aemets and all the well ones go on a mass exodus to avoid catching the "demon" Gripthia.
The flying dragonish Korvi, and the fox-like Ferrin are the most interdependent. Korvi fly to trade and act as messengers, they are also strong enough to mine for the gemstones which hold mage power. Long-lived Peregrine has mined for many decades and has lost his hearing. Over these years he has had Ferrin to aide in hearing and his latest is Tillian, who he has raised from babyhood. The Ferrin also perform tasks suited to their size and high energy. Peregrine and Tillian are paired for her lifetime.
During the crisis Peregrine, who has just ended his mining career has just attempted his first messenger flight with Tillian. They go to Roses town and find Rose overworked and short handed. He leaves Tillian with Rose who welcomes her capable paws.
The Aemet are farmers and also labor in the cities, so the Gripthia hits the races equally hard because of the specialization and interdependency of the species. The Ferrin usually attach themselves to a family and their litters pledge to work and live for successive lifetimes. Peregrine has seen 6 generations of Ferrin, or "clan children", in his almost 150 year life, 100 of which were spent being a miner. His wife is Gralia, a potter, who joins Peregrine as a messenger in these trying times of need.
The structure of this world and it citizens is well thought out. You are immersed in all of its peculiarities and nothing seems to wake you out of how this world revolves. I enjoyed it very much, and would like to see another volume set in this world. I read a free book offered for review.
I'm sure if I didn't have over 3K books to read on my alone I might have the patience for this book. But I have found myself not reading just to avoid finishing this book. I think my biggest problem with the book is trying to keep track of the alien names for the beings on this planet, yet they have Earth names for grains and other utensils. And the story is so slow in getting off the ground. Maybe if I could relate to any of the main characters in any way I would have read further. It seems like an interesting premise but...

Please read it for yourself. I see many who loved the book. It just wasn't my cup of tea, for right now.
